Graniteville Neighbors Gather To Determine Future of Surplus Fire Station

Recently, the Board of Selectmen declared the abandoned Graniteville Fire Station as a surplus property, also asking Graniteville residents to come up with some ideas on what to do with the station if it isn’t sold.

Those residents came together last week to share their thoughts, and ultimately came together with one conclusion to give to the Selectmen: the best option is something that uses the building to add to the neighborhood, especially something that is a creative use that could reflect upon Graniteville history.

Several ideas included possible light commercial options such as a coffee shop, art studio or as a bakery in conjunction with Nashoba Tech’s culinary program.

Residents also thought the property could be used as an annex for the library, senior center, or Roudenbush Community Center.

Westford Veterans’ Agent Terry Stader has also asked if the town could consider donating the building to the adjacent American Legion post for use as a function hall.

Ultimately, the only option discussed that residents found distasteful was the possibility of the property being turned into a parking lot, which they felt would create increased traffic and noise that would detract from the character of the neighborhood.

An assessed value of the building has been placed at $360,000. However, during the meeting residents hoped that the process could be delayed to determine a fair market value for the building from a real estate professional.

The Board of Selectmen has requested the neighbors return to their Sept. 16 meeting for input on how to proceed with the building.
