The Lowell Sun is reporting that Gerard Arciero, the father of incumbent State Representative Jim Arciero (D-Westford), passed away on Saturday night after several weeks at a hospital in Savannah, Ga.

Arciero left for Savannah on Oct. 9 and learned his father was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer, which had spread to his brain, spine and hip.

His father was 74 years old.

“He was such a hard worker. He fought to the very end,” said Arciero to the Sun. “He left on his own terms.”

Throughout the day, well wishers from throughout the towns Arciero represents shared their condolences on the representative’s Facebook page.

Arciero will seek a third term on Nov. 4 against opponents Dennis Galvin (R-Westford) and Arleen Martino (Unenrolled-Littleton).

UPDATE: Galvin has issued a release upon learning the news stating that the thoughts and prayers of his campaign are extended to the Arciero family at this time.
