The Chelmsford Community Band has begun its 2015-16 season and it’s looking for help to update its long-neglected percussion instruments.
So far the band, which has members from Westford, has been able begin some fundraising efforts. However, more money is needed for newer percussion instruments for performances.
“Our bells are what they give elementary school kids to take home and practice on,” says Amy Thompson, a percussionist in the band. “They were never meant to be used in performance.”
The band was recently able to obtain a set of Adams Symphonic Chimes surrendered by a recently closing school, which Thompson believes is a good beginning to the replacement initiative.
“The sound is beautiful and everything you would expect for this instrument,” she said. “Adding this sound to our percussion section has been on our Percussion Wish List for years.”
As the fundraising efforts continue, the band is preparing for their next concert, “Celestial Harmonies.” That will take place at the Chelmsford Senior Center on Nov. 8 at 2 p.m.
Paypal donations can be made online at the band’s website, chelmsfordband.org.
