Kudos to Westford Girls for a Better Tomorrow for partnering with Habitat for Humanity and the St. Martin Team at LAER Realty Partners, to organize a fund raiser for affordable housing in the greater Lowell area. In my memory this is a first.
Habitat for Humanity is a worldwide organization that builds homes for lower income persons. Their program is unique, in that it creates housing for ownership, not rental, and Habitat is the mortgage holder for the units it creates – no big Wall Street banks to foreclose on the homeowner. Further, the homeowner pays NO INTEREST on the purchase of their home; each payment goes to directly reduce the principle. The funds thus recouped by Habitat are used to repeat this process. This is the premier program producing low income housing in our area, and I strongly urge residents to come out on June 5th, and take a walk to support it.
