A classic scene of Americana played out on Sunday as Forge Village residents gathered to honor veterans for Memorial Day.
The classic scene of babies, parents, and children on bikes, could have occurred any time since the end of World War II — with one exception: there would have been many more military veterans just after World War II, and they would have been mostly young men.
Today, the names of those World War II veterans are chiseled in the tombstones that line our cemeteries. The World War II veterans are almost all gone. Only 620,000 of the 16 million soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen remain, according to  the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Sunday’s parade was a mixture of young and old. But the demonstration of respect in this historic, tight-knit section of Westford, is as strong as ever, as evidenced by the numbers who marched and the numbers who watched.
