Governor Charlie Baker announced on Oct. 24 that he has appointed Dr. Mindy Hull to lead the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME). Hull has served as a medical examiner at the OCME since 2007. Hull replaces Dr. Henry Nields, who has served as Chief Medical Examiner since 2008.
“The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office serves a critical role in administering justice across the Commonwealth and Dr. Hull has the professional experience necessary to the lead the dedicated and talented OCME team,” said Governor Baker.
“Supporting the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been a priority for our Administration and we look forward to continuing that support to help the office continue the progress it has made in its critically important work,” said Lt. Governor Karyn Polito.
“As a former prosecutor I have worked closely with Dr. Hull on a number of cases and have great respect for her skills as a pathologist and investigator,” said Dan Bennett, Secretary of Public Safety and Security. “She has a thorough understanding of all aspects of the office and has consistently displayed the leadership skills necessary to carry the office forward.”
“I am pleased with the Governor’s appointment of Dr. Mindy Hull,” said Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe. “As a member of the Medico-Legal Commission and as a District Attorney, I have come to know Dr. Hull and I have great respect for her dedication to the office and to her work ethic. I am confident that she understands the challenges of this important position and together with the Baker-Polito Administration will continue to move the office forward.”
“The Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is made up of a team of tireless and dedicated individuals who are responsible for investigating, documenting, and understanding the unexplained, unattended, or mysterious deaths that occur across the Commonwealth,” said Hull. “Whether it is providing families with closure, evidence to the courts, or a statistical overview of the well-being of our communities, our office reaches across many different areas. I am honored to be chosen to lead this office and I approach this role with a deep sense of responsibility and pride in the work that we do.”

Goldstein, Program Director at Robert’s Program on Sudden Unexpected Death in Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital-Harvard Medical School, praised Dr. Hull’s appointment: “The appointment of Dr. Hull is great news. She is extremely well qualified and Massachusetts will benefit from her years of experience and commitment to the Medical Examiner’s Office. In our work together in sudden unexpected deaths in children, I have found her to be meticulous and deeply thoughtful. About Dr. Mindy Hull:
Hull has been a medical examiner at the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner since 2007. She earned her undergraduate degree in Natural Science and Mathematics at Bradford College in Haverhill, Massachusetts and her M.D. at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. She completed her residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2007 and a one-year fellowship in Forensic Pathology at the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in 2008. She holds the following board certifications: Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Pathology, National Board of Physicians and Surgeons; Anatomic Pathology, American Board of Pathology; and Forensic Pathology, American Board of Pathology.
