A blustery winter storm on Jan. 4 shut down Town Hall and all nine Westford public schools for the day.

Weather reports issued a storm warning through 1 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 5 with expected snow accumulations of 12 to 16 inches.

Public safety officials employed the town’s AM 1630 emergency radio station to help keep residents informed.

Trash collection for Thursday — already pushed back one day because of the New Year holiday on Jan. 1 — was delayed by a couple of hours, according to Facebook posts by residents.

A group of Westford Academy students were hawking their shoveling services, and a resident reminded others that they could help themselves to one bucketful of a sand and salt mixture to spread on icy pathways. The town-owned pile is next to the town’s animal kennel at the end of Beacon Street.

Residents in the northwest area of town and living off Route 110 reported roads that were not yet plowed by late morning, making motor vehicle passage difficult.

The town website made no mention of a shelter should dwellers lose electrical power today.
