Please be at annual Town Meeting on at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 24 and please vote no on Article 9 which asks voters to set the wheels in motion to install full-fledged traffic signals in front of the 1794 First Parish Church at Westford Common.

In 1996, I was hired to design a landscape plan for Westford Common for the joint Historical Commission and Historical Society’s Common Restoration Project. I still remember after analyzing the site it was the country charm and rural New England character of the town common that embodies the town of Westford.

In the ensuing 22 years, thanks to donations from Westford families the landscape plan has been implemented. New benches, trees and the bandstand have restored the Common to the “gem of rural beauty” Westford residents knew in the late 1800s.

A traffic signal at Boston Road and Main Street is exactly the opposite of what the Common Restoration landscape plan was designed for and has achieved.  I do not want to lose this signature statement as I fear it will devalue what we love about the town. –Gloria Gilbert, Landscape Designer
