The Friends of the J. V. Fletcher Library, Inc. June Book Sale is on the horizon: Friday, June 8, Saturday, June 9 and Sunday, June 10. A Friends Members Only Sale will be held on Friday evening from 6:30 to 9 p.m. A Friends membership (which may be purchased at the door) is necessary for attending the Members Only Sale. The entire public is invited to the all day Saturday sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and to the Sunday half-price extravaganza sale from 2 to 4 p.m. The June Book Sale offers the perfect opportunity to stock up on vacation and summer reading.
Mystery Book Club: Monday, June 4 (please note date change due to Memorial Day) at 10:30 a.m. The book club meets once a month on Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the Mary Atwood Room. The current selection is “God in Concord” by Jane Langton. Copies of the current selection are available for check-out at the Main Desk. New Members are welcome. Registration is not required.
Feasting with your Spiralizer! : Thursday, June 14 at 7 p.m. Spiralizers have brought new life to vegetables. Join Chef Liz Barbour of The Creative Feast as she unlocks the secrets to creating recipes with a spiralizer. She will present a cooking demonstration and allow participants to sample recipes featuring fresh, healthy ingredients. Registration is required through the Meeting Room calendar or residents can call the Information Services Department at 978-399-2304.
J.V. Fletcher Adult Book Discussion Group: Thursday, June 14 at 7:30 p.m. The group will discuss “Inheritance of Loss” by Kiran Desai. Copies of the current reading selection are available for check-out at the Main Desk. New members are always welcome. Attendees do not need to register.
Ukulele Strum-Along: Musicians Learn to Play by Playing: Saturday, June 16 at 2 p.m. Focusing on two and three chord songs, this program is for the beginner ukulele player who wants to practice and play music with others. Singing is encouraged. Ukuleles available to borrow, songs projected onto a screen so no music stands or books necessary. Open to adults and teens. Please note, there will be no Ukulele Strum-Alongs in July or August but they will resume in September.
Cookbook Book Club: Tues., June 19 at 7 p.m. The Cookbook Book Club is dedicated to exploring cookbooks and sampling new recipes. Copies of this month’s choice, Tapas: A Taste of Spain in America by José Andrés, are available for check out at the Main Desk. Participants who would like to bring a dish from the cookbook (not required to participate), are asked to contact Sarah Regan in the Information Services Department at 978-399-2309. No registration required. Please note that as of July 2018, the club is moving to the third Thursday of the month.
“Readers ROCK” is the 2018 Children’s Summer Reading Program theme. Residents are asked to register in the Youth Services Department for this Friends’ funded program. Some events require tickets for children, parents, and/or caregivers while others are free and drop-in. The week of June 25 will be the first week to bring in reading logs and collect prizes. Residents are encouraged to call, visit the Youth Services Department, or check out the Children’s Summer Reading Program page on the library’s website for more information on this summer-long spree. The library offers Young Adult and Adult reading programs, too.
Music Update: The librarians continue to buy music on CD in all genres, and welcome suggestions. They have ordered a slew of new music that is just now arriving, such as After the Fall featuring Jazz performing artists Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and JackDeJohnette. For folk fans the library has Joan Baez’s first album in 10 years: Whistle in the Wind. New popular music includes Janell Monae’s Dirty Computer and PTX Presents: Top Pop, Vol.1 by the famed acapella group Pentatonix.
