Cookbook Club: Thursday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. The Cookbook Club is dedicated to exploring cookbooks and sampling new recipes. This month’s choice is The Steamy Kitchen Cookbook: 101 Asian Recipes by Jaden Hair. Participants wanting to bring a dish from the cookbook (not required to participate), are asked to contact Sarah Regan in the Information Services Department at 978-399-2309. The Cookbook Club is funded by the Friends of the Library. No registration required.
Unraveling America’s Musical Roots with Craig Harris: Thursday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. Musician and author Craig Harris presents a multimedia program. Combining archival audio/film, well-researched storytelling, and collective music-making, this program runs the gamut from old-time Appalachian fiddlers and bluegrass banjo players to Americana experimenters and beyond. Monday Mystery Book Club: Monday, Aug. 27 at 10:30 a.m. The book club meets once a month on Monday morning at 10:30 a.m. in the Mary Atwood Room. This month’s selection is Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger. New members are always welcome to drop in.
Adult Nonfiction Book Club (NEW!): Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. Is truth stranger than fiction? Is it more entertaining? Participants will find out in the NEW Adult Nonfiction Book Club. The group will meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Mary Atwood Room. Dates and book titles can be found on the website and at the Information Desk. The first book discussion on Sept. 4 will be American Fire: Love, Arson and Life in a Vanishing Land by Monica Hesse. Copies of the current selection are at Main Desk. No registration is required.
College Financial Aid Workshop: Thursday, Sept. 6 at 6:30 p.m. Those who don’t know the rules, can’t win the game. Financial coach T. Jack Wang will go over common questions such as how to save for college, options for paying, how to get more aid, and what factors are truly important. He’ll discuss how to avoid the unintentional mistakes that ruin the chances for aid. This is not the same information presented in the guidance/MEFA financial aid session. FREE! English Conversation Circle is starting up again. The group will resume its weekly meetings starting Tuesday, Sept. 11. They meet every Tuesday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Mary Atwood Room. Non-native English speakers can practice their conversational skills and meet new friends in a relaxed and friendly environment led by Carol Morse. FREE! Registration is not required. Know the Ten Signs of Dementia: Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. If you or someone you know is experiencing memory loss or behavioral changes, it’s time to learn the facts. Early detection of Alzheimer’s disease gives patients a chance to begin drug therapy, enroll in clinical studies and plan for the future. This interactive workshop, run by Lisa Sobhian of the Alzheimer’s Association, features video clips of people with Alzheimer’s disease. Residents can register online or in the Information Services Department.
The Youth Services Department has copies of the summer reading lists for Westford’s public schools for grades 1 to 8. Parents can access them from the online catalog, or by asking at the Youth Services Desk. Also, Story Time and Book Club registration starts Monday, Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m.
