My name is Gloria Miller and I am a proud member of Team Koh. With a field of ten Democratic candidates in the Third District, many voters have asked me how I decided to support Dan Koh for Congress. The short answer is my daughter figured it out first, but here is the long answer.
In June, my daughter Robin graduated from Westford Academy and as a member of the Westford School Committee, I was honored to hand a diploma to her. But like many senior parents, I also wondered if she planned to spend her summer watching Netflix.
Several days later, she was engrossed in her computer screen and to my surprise, she was researching congressional candidates. She picked Dan Koh as her favorite candidate, applied to be a campaign fellow and less than a week after graduation, she was canvassing door to door and phone banking. Extreme heat or rain didn’t matter, Team Koh volunteers were out “doing the work” every single day, all summer long. So much for Netflix.
Anyone who says the younger generation isn’t politically engaged hasn’t met the dedicated fellows on Team Koh. As a member of a town board, I sheepishly realized I needed to play catch up. So I watched debates, took a deep dive into the candidates’ policy statements, and researched their backgrounds and experience. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised to discover what my daughter already knew: Dan Koh is the best choice for Congress.
Dan’s website (www.koh2018.com) sets out a bold, detailed education plan, including promoting early childhood education, making college more affordable and reducing student debt, improving STEM education, and supporting a strong public education system. Dan’s experience in local government, serving as Chief of Staff to Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, gives him a unique insight into the challenges facing local governments. And Dan’s personal background as a descendent of Korean and Lebanese immigrants means he fiercely believes in protecting the American Dream for everyone.
If Dan is elected this fall, he would be the only Korean American serving in Congress and again to my surprise, the first person of color elected to Congress from Massachusetts in several decades. Dan Koh is a young, progressive leader who inspires future leaders like my daughter. I encourage voters in Westford and throughout the Third District to join me in supporting Dan Koh for Congress on Sept. 4. — Gloria Miller, Westford, MA
