February Westford History Discussion Group- Immigrant Stories, The Westford Historical Society will be hosting a Westford History Discussion Group on Mondays during February starting at 7 p.m. This year’s topic: Westford Immigrant Stories from the late 19th to the early 21st century. The group will meet at the Museum. We’ll be basing our sessions on both transcribed and recorded interviews of over a century of immigrants from places such as Russia, England,
Sweden and India who came to make Westford their home. Why did they come here? Where did they work? What were their work and social lives like? What was it like to live in Westford? Participants will touch on these and many other questions as we hear their stories. Many nationalities have come to Westford over the past century.
The group will broadly highlight the following over the four weeks: Feb. 4 – Russia; Feb. 11 – England, Feb. 18 – Sweden.
Attendees will look at the granite industry in Westford on Feb. 25 – India – Shankar Hegde will read from his recent autobiography American Ajja and discuss his immigrant experience. Reading materials will be made available in advance in either PDF format (by e-mail) or paper copy at the WHS office.
Interested residents can email Westford Historical Society Director, Linda Greene, at [email protected] to let her know they will be attending and should receive the reading materials. This discussion group complements the Historical Society’s yearlong theme of Immigration. This event is free and open to the public.
