A new video on WestfordCAT tells the story of a young undocumented woman from Honduras and the oscillating journey she took to make a new home in the United States. Betsy Alvarez is the producer and host of New Beginnings, a cable access series that features stories of people facing life challenges and successfully advancing through adverse conditions.
As the winner of the show’s Mothers Day Challenge, Edna Orellana is interviewed by Alvarez and shares her story as an undocumented immigrant from Honduras. Her perseverance and desire for safety and a better life pulled her through a tragic accident and a deportation that left her with even less of a chance of surviving in her native homeland.
Orellana finally did make it to the United States and has lived here for 12 years. Despite her setbacks and physical challenges, she has supported herself by cleaning houses, shoveling snow, and doing other odd jobs. She is a skilled seamstress in the clothing manufacturing industry but without proper documentation she is unable to work in her field. She is currently seeking asylum and is in the process of obtaining the documents she needs to legally remain in this country, work and support her 6-year-old daughter.
