This may sound like a strange topic for a column on health, but hear me out.

There’s a world of information out there just waiting for you to take hold, explore and learn.

Even if you don’t like to read or believe you don’t read well, there are audible books you can enjoy anytime…even while you’re folding clothes or commuting to and from work.

Here’s the connection to the health part. The way I got started down the path to real remission from my chronic depression and the way I lost 20 pounds without dieting was by reading a book.  Really…it was.  This book gave me a new life, and I didn’t know it would happen.

In 2012, I just happened to watch a PBS special that featured Dr. Mark Hyman, a functional medicine physician based in western Massachusetts.  He had just published “The Blood Sugar Solution,” and the program was based on that book.  The information seemed to fill so many aspects of a potential solution to a real life dilemma my husband Rob and I were dealing with.  Rob was being pushed toward Type 2 diabetes by the statin drug Lipitor that he had been taking for years to “help” with a family history of high cholesterol.

We realized we had to back him off the diabetes danger and normalize his cholesterol so we could get him off the statin. What Dr. Hyman was talking about seemed to be the answer, so we bought his book, read it and began living what he taught.

Following the book, we began to eat differently. We were eating real whole food now with processed foods gone from our diets. Within a few months, Rob’s glucose levels began to normalize as did his cholesterol.  He was eventually able to stop the statin and the side effects began to disappear. For me, in a few months we realized the chronic depression I had struggled with since I was 12 years old was a thing of the past. I haven’t dealt with chronic depression in over six years.

Many of you know me as a residential Realtor which I have been for more than 25 years.  I hid my depression from you because I didn’t think you would hire me as your Realtor thinking I couldn’t do my job if I were depressed.  I did do my job though, and often fought through depression to take good care of you in your home purchase or sale.  I believe I’m good at what I do, and now I’m able to do an even better job more easily for my clients without the looming threat of a depressive episode. One book transformed my life… Reading transformed my life.

I’m now dedicating a significant amount of time to teaching others to do what I have done.  And, to be clear, this is not just for those of you who deal with depression. This is for everyone who wants to be and feel healthier, both mentally and physically.

My blog, https://ThinStrongHealthy.com is there for you to use as a reference.  I have many posts there you can read that have information for you; there are lists of books, other resources and recipes I have developed that are not only healthy but really delicious!  It’s all there for you; please check it out.

I want you to know how powerful you are, and I want you to take back your power and control over your own health and wellbeing.

It’s a journey that lasts a lifetime, and it leads to wonderful things! Please join me.
