Friends of the J. V. Fletcher Library, Inc. October Book Sale: Friday, Oct. 18, Saturday, Oct. 19 and Sunday, Oct. 20. A Friends Members Only Sale will be held on Friday evening from 6 – 9 p.m. A Friends membership (which may be purchased at the door) is necessary for attending this sale. The entire public is invited Saturday for an all-day sale, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and for the half price extravaganza sale on Sunday, from 2– 4 p.m.  Thousands of gently used hardcovers and paperbacks, audiobooks, vinyl, DVDs, & CDs are for sale at low prices.

Make Your College Essay Sparkle: Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. Seniors, are you struggling to find the right college essay topic? . Journalist Joyce Pellino Crane will use sample essays to show you how to begin and organize your story. She will discuss how to create curiosity to keep the reader interested, how to move the story forward to demonstrate emotional growth, and how to end it on a serendipitous note. Adult Book Club: Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Members will discuss The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson. Copies of the current reading selection are available for check-out at the Main Desk.  New members are always welcome! Patrons can check out our Reading List.

 Drop-in Diwali Craft: Tuesday, Oct. 15 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. An activity for a Westford schools “no school day” in celebration of the Hindu Festival of Lights. The crafts are best for ages 5 and up but younger kids can come with a supervising adult. This FREE drop in program is funded by the Friends of the J.V. Fletcher Library. No registration is required.

Cookbook Club: Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. The Cookbook Club is dedicated to exploring cookbooks and sampling new recipes. Our October choice is Salt Fat Acid Heat by Samin Nosrat. Copies are available for check out at the Main Desk.  If you would like to bring a dish from the cookbook (not required to participate), please contact Sarah Regan in Information Services at 978-399-2309. Halloween Library Style! Thursday, Oct. 24 from 4 to 5 p.m. The Youth Services librarians are at it again – they have brewed up a variety of games, crafts, and, costumes. Patrons are invited to wear their best Halloween look and join in for some (not so) scary fun. Tickets ($2) for kids and their caregivers are available in the Youth Services department. This program is funded by the Friends of the J.V. Fletcher Library. Best for school age kids but siblings can join in with their caregivers.

Being Mortal Book Discussion: Thu., Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. Patrons can join in for a discussion of Being Mortal by Dr. Atul Gawande, a sensitive, intelligent and heartfelt examination of the processes of aging and dying. Social worker Kathy Benson and clinical nurse Joanne McCole will lead the discussion as we examine Dr. Gawande’s question, “We all die, so why don’t we die well?” This program highlights portions of the relevant Frontline episode to introduce the book, so attendees are not required to read it in advance. More exciting happenings at the Library:   In September, the Library began work on a new library website, which will finally afford a more user-friendly, graphical and responsive resource to Westford library users. The staff members plan to unveil this upgrade in January 2020, and offer a cutting edge Library web experience. This initiative is funded in part by the Friends of the J. V. Fletcher Library, Inc.

Link to Literacy: Link to Literacy is a non-profit, volunteer run organization devoted to enabling adults who have joined us from other cultures to read, write, and speak American English more effectively. Training and materials are provided to tutors. Tutors work with their students at the Library. Download a tutor or student application or for more information, stop by or contact the Information Services department at 978-399-2304.

Museum of Fine Arts Pass: A premier art museum right in your backyard. Our Friends funded pass admits up to 2 people based on availability. Patrons can check out the museum passes page on the website or call the library for reservations.

Museum of Science Pass: Set sail for the stars and see science at work. Our Friends funded pass admits up to 4 people based on availability. Patrons can check out the museum passes page on our website or call the Library for reservations.

Database of the Week: Got a school project due? Explore the updated online Encyclopedia Britannica database with hundreds of thousands of articles, biographies, videos, images, and web sites. Check out our Databases page to learn more.
