Our community is experiencing a rapidly evolving public health crisis that is impacting town operations. The Select Board will hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. to take a vote on declaring a Local State of Emergency. In order to protect the health of our town staff, officials, and residents at large, this meeting will be held via videoconference with all members participating remotely. This meeting will be streamed on WestfordCAT and the agenda will be updated Monday afternoon with instructions for submitting questions and comments during the meeting.

Our town’s primary goals are to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 by doing our part locally to practice social distancing, to ensure our first responders have the appropriate equipment and protocols in place to protect themselves so we may continue to provide emergency response and other public safety services to our residents and others, and to protect our town staff and officials in order to continue our local town government operations.

As of Friday at noon, town offices were closed to the public. These offices included the Town Hall, Cameron Senior Center, Water Department, Highway Department, and the J.V. Fletcher Library (as of today). Our schools are also closed, including Nashoba Valley Technical High School, and the Roudenbush preschool programs. Town employees are working quickly to determine the best way to continue providing services while minimizing social contact. If you need help from a town department, you are encouraged to call ahead to see if service can be provided over the phone or internet.

Town Manager Jodi Ross has asked all boards and committees to temporarily postpone nonessential meetings. We need to continue our local government, but in ways that reduce the risk of exposing our officials, staff and residents to this virus. Those boards who have time sensitive or essential functions will begin meeting remotely and virtually. The first board to meet remotely was the Board of Health which conducted a meeting on Monday, March 16 at 8:30 a.m. Please bear with us while we work out any technical difficulties.

Westford has a long history of rallying to care for friends and neighbors during times of crisis. Your kindness and patience are appreciated. — Elizabeth Almeida, Chair, Select Board
