Today, I want to address freedom and growth. If there is one place you should be free, it is in your own mind. You might have limitations in terms of what your body is capable of doing and what you’re allowed to do, but your mind should be free to roam wherever you want it to.

This is not the reality in which most of us live. Instead, your thoughts are dictated by your circumstances, and those circumstances are largely out of your control – or at least it feels that way. That’s why you often find yourself feeling dissatisfied and constantly wanting to push forward, rather than stopping to enjoy life and appreciating what you have.

This has become so clearly evident lately. In an environment where we value a hair cut more than our safety and the safety of those around us, I’m drawn to the values and the tolerances of the Greatest Generation. (I’m casting no aspersions on hair dressers; I need a trip to mine as well.)

I was raised by older parents who had survived the depression. They didn’t have much and made do with what they had. They didn’t complain either. “Stuff” was less important to them than it is to us today.  We would ask my dad what he wanted for his birthday or Christmas; nine times out of ten, he would say, “Nothing; I have everything I need”.

Are You Happy?

Most of us are constantly in a position of slight dissatisfaction. You may feel as though there’s “one more thing” that could make your life better and help you be happier. Maybe you wish you had more money, or maybe you wish you had a bigger house. Maybe you want a better or just a different job.

In part, this is admittedly encouraged by advertisers pushing you to covet the material goods you don’t have. You want more money so you can play the latest game, wear the latest clothes and post pictures of yourself on holiday to show to friends. (Well, maybe not that last one this month…)

We’re not out of this pandemic yet. Not by a long shot, and I’m very concerned that our inability to scale back and deal with the basics will bite us big time. I wish for you to be able to step back and take a look at what you really need to get through these next few months. In my opinion, that is the minimum time frame we are looking at with this challenge in which we find ourselves. The prediction yesterday, with cautious optimism, was that a vaccine may be available in this country by the end of the year. If you knew someone who has died of the virus, as I do, you know this is not a hoax.

Making a Change

Think about that game you find yourself wanting. Aren’t there computer games on your shelf right now you haven’t played yet? Aren’t there free games you could download today and have just as much fun with? Isn’t it just marketing that is pushing you towards that next game and that next expense?

I believe this time we’re in can be a tremendous opportunity for a reset in our lives. There is always opportunity if you’re open to it. There is always mental work that can be done to strengthen your resolve, to change the way you think, to grow your knowledge base and yes, even to find a new way to work – new way to make a living.

So how do you make a change, address freedom and growth and start to be freer and happier right now? One of the most important answers is that you change your focus. Instead of fixating on what you don’t have and on what you want, focus instead on what you already have for which you’re grateful. This is called a “gratitude attitude” and it’s the fastest route to having a satisfying and happy life.

There’s a wonderful book, “The Power of Your Subconscious Mind” by Joseph Murphy. It was written in 2019, and it can change your life. You can download a free copy of it here.

Joseph Murphy wrote, in part:

“You grow old when you cease to dream, and when you lose
interest in life. You grow old if you are irritable, crotchety, petulant,
and cantankerous. Fill your mind with the truths of God and radiate
the sunshine of His love—this is youth.

Look ahead, for at all times you are gazing into infinite life…Give your attention to living life.
Become a producer and not a prisoner of society. Don’t hide your light under a bushel.”
