QUICK QUOTES FROM THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE

“This is a job description that we’re bringing to you for the first time tonight. This is somewhat of a re-work of the responsibilities for one of the positions. As you know, Ingrid (Nilsson) has recommended in her reorganization plan. It’s the assistant director of School Finance. We have an outstanding person in the position. We have beefed up the responsibilities of the position. I like to think it’s a person who, if God forbid, Ingrid ever became ill and was out for a while could step right in and take over the responsibilities not to the same extent as Ingrid but has the capabilities of doing that.” —  EVERETT V. OLSEN JR., SUPERINTENDENT

“I assume this is a conversation for executive session. And I can’t honestly vote based on a job description with an unknown price tag on it at this time…I can’t just write you a blank check for whatever you think the increase is.”  –AVERY ADAM, SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEMBER

GOOD NEWS

“We did close the year…with $92K left over. …The balances were great enough that I didn’t have to take as much from school choice as we had anticipated when the budget was developed for 2020, saving just a little — under $40,000 (forty thousand dollars). So we’ll have another $800K [Eight hundred thousand dollars] in circuit breaker funds for fiscal 21 for special education, which is really important. As you recall, in February we requested an FYI of $400K [Four hundred thousand dollars] because we were so concerned. I think that’s great news. –INGRID NILSSON, SCHOOL FINANCE DIRECTOR

BUS FEES DECIDED
“I will make a motion that we accept the recommendation before us and approve a bus fee for $150 for the first semester of the school year and a WA parking fee for $100 for the first semester, open to seniors and juniors if there is capacity. That is a unanimous vote” — GLORIA MILLER, SCHOOL COMMITTEE CHAIR
