$100 Million Secured for Rourke Bridge
State Sen. Edward J. Kennedy, a Lowell Democrat, paid a visit to WestfordCAT on Sept. 11 to update the community on Legislative activities. From a transportation bond bill, $100 million has been secured for the construction of a four-lane permanent Rourke Bridge in Lowell. Another $2.1 million has been earmarked for the rehabilitation of pedestrian safety and improvements at Oak Hill Road in Westford. Kennedy represents the first Middlesex district of Westford, Lowell, Pepperell, Dunstable, Groton, and Tyngsborough. Images of Nor’eastern Dinghies
It was the unpredictable movement of water that drew Nancy Rich back to photography after retiring from a 40-year career as a school administrator. Rich, of Natick, is one of several regional artists on tap to display their art at Westford’s Parish Center for the Arts in 2021 — delayed by the pandemic. Rich spent a decade producing a book entitled, “Afloat on the Tide.” It featured images of Nor’eastern dinghies along the New England coastline.
“I think they’re gorgeous,” she said of the wooden boats, now rarely spotted. “I think they’re emblematic of New England. They’ve got so much character.”
Rich also produces images of sea sculptures and liquid, and ice capades.
Stephens Named Approving Authority
Selectmen on Sept. 18 approved 4 to 0 a request to appoint Health Director Jeff Stephens as the municipal approving authority. Stephens can now allow certain program adjustments to support families with students engaged in remote learning. The change complies with Governor Baker’s COVID-19 Executive Order No. 49. Select Board member Mark Kost did not attend the meeting.
A Good Environment for Jam
Jam Cataldo, a member of the Westford Academy Class of 2020, was the last of six graduates to be featured on WestfordCAT’s website this summer. They, like graduating seniors across the country, faced disappointment as the pandemic virus prevented the teens from engaging in traditional activities. Spring sports and the prom were cancelled along with a school trip to Disney World in Orlando. When asked what she would miss the most as she looks forward to attending Brandeis University, Cataldo said this: ““I’m going to miss the teachers and the students probably the most. Just being able to see that group of people everyday. It was just a really nice structure and a very good environment for me.”
