Banning Recreational Marijuana Establishments Will Have Unintended Consequences

 

At the upcoming Special Town Meeting, Westford residents will vote on whether or not to ban recreational marijuana businesses in Westford. Cited among the reasons for various committee members’ support for the two articles proposing the ban is a desire to keep marijuana out of the hands of young people. This is a well-founded effort; there is a growing body of scientific evidence showing that consumption of cannabis for recreation can diminish the capacity of a developing mind to learn. However, the proposed ban on commercial cannabis establishments will actually make it much easier for young people to obtain cannabis. State law allows for the cultivation of six cannabis plants per person, up to twelve per household, and the proposed commercial ban encourages users to grow their own. Continue Reading →

Public Consumption of Marijuana Debated at Special Town Meeting

Three articles on regulating the recreational use and sale of marijuana were debated on the special Town Meeting floor on Oct. 16. Wendy Darragh sought and failed to amend Article 10 by omitting the words “independent testing laboratory.” The article, which asked voters to prohibit recreational marijuana establishments in town, passed by a majority vote.
