Westford Academy didn’t have a significant presence at last weekend’s Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Track and Field Outdoor Championships at Bridgewater State, it still had a respectable showing.
On the girls’ side, the Grey Ghosts finished 16th overall with 13 points, 27 behind winner Newton North and 12.66 ahead of last place Stoneham.
In the girls’ 4×400 meter relay the Ghosts had a time of 4:00.09 to finish fourth, ten seconds behind event winner Mansfield, however it wasn’t their best finish on the female side.
That came in the girls’ pole vault, Ashley Craig, who finished second with a final height of 11 feet, 9 inches just behind Algonquin’s Carly Railing.
However, that wasn’t the only pole vault result for the Ghosts, with three entrants on the boys’ side hoping to emulate Westford alumnus Brendan Sullivan, who set the state record in 2012.
Unfortunately, no Ghosts this year could equal Sullivan’s record-setting figure of 15 feet, 3 inches. The closest was senior Dillon McGee, who finished sixth with a result of 12 feet, 9 inches, a foot lower than the winning height of Westborough’s Jack Chuma.
McGee was joined in the competition by fellow Ghosts Kyle Dutton (11th place) and Liam Donaher (24th place).
The three pole vaulting results were enough to put the Ghosts in 69th place overall in terms of the boys’ results out of the 88 competing teams.
