On Wednesday, March 11 the Hollaback Girlz took the championship with a tight one-point victory over the Fireballs.  This game was close the whole way, with neither team being able to pull out more than a four-point lead at any time.  The dynamic duo of Katie Ross and Caroline Dolan led the way for the Hollaback Girlz, as they have all season, with 15 and 12 points respectively.  Beth Geraghty, Tori Weiss and Kynaz Khimani rounded out the scoring, with Lauren Cullen, Mayble Wong, Caroline Campbell and Annika Sriram all contributing on defense.  The Fireballs gave a strong team effort, with Leah Bushey leading the scoring (12), but Emily Perone (two clutch three-pointers), Katy Fitzsimmons, Maeli Cherry, Jhawar Prachi and Hannah Kruger all contributing points as well.  Jackie Joncas directed the offense with strong ball handling, along with Cory Mains.  This was an exciting game from start to finish – an appropriate finish to a wonderful HSG season.

Leading up to the championship game, the playoffs started with a win by the Shamrocks 39 to 30 over the Dophins – led by a dominant performance by Leah Donovan (16 points).  The Hollabacks then started their championship run with a 29 to 23 victory over the Blue Flames, despite strong performances by McKenna Watson and Megan Lawlor.  In the third playoff game the Hippies used their experience to overcome a tremendous game by Julette Noone (15 points) of the Black Squad, to take the game 32 to 25.  The Tissues then outpaced the Hot Pink Chili Peppers 35 to 17 – with all Tissues members getting in on the scoring.  Then the final pairing for the semi-finals was set when the Fireballs – led by their seniors – proved too strong for the younger Shamrocks, with the Fireballs winning 48 to 24.

The semi’s had two strong games, starting with the Hollaback Girls coming on strong late to win 28 to 22 over the Tissues.  Then the Fireballs took the second semi, in a tight 26 to 24 match-up with the Hippies – to set up the championship game.

Congratulations to all WYBA HSG players on a fine season – despite all of the weather cancellations.
