Last week the Baker-Polito Administration awarded nearly $755,000 in water related grants across 12 communities in the Commonwealth and Westford was one of those communities.

Westford is set to receive $78,942 in addition to other in-kind contributions through the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Sustainable Water Management Initiative, or SWMI.

The announcement is the third round of funding made available for updating local water infrastructure and ensuring healthy waterbodies.

“Clean and reliable water sources are vital to our municipalities andkey to long-term planning for future growth and economic development,”said Governor Charles Baker. “These local efforts will enhance watersupplies across the Commonwealth and assist in the restoration and preservation of our natural resources.”

Westford’s funding will go toward a rebate program for water efficient appliances in municipal buildings.

Other approved grants from nearby towns included a streamlined permit renewal process in Littleton that will help permit applicants save water in their buildings. According to the SWMI, that process aims to create a generalized best practices template for permits that will make it cheaper to be more water efficient.

These grants and other water topics are expected to be discussed during an evening talking about the health of Westford’s Water Bodies. The event will take place on April 2 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Nabnasset Lake Country Club. RSVPs can be obtained by Laurie Lessard at 978-692-5509 or llessard@westfordma.gov

More information on the other community grants is available at the DEP website.
