On May 5th, only one candidate’s name for the Board of Selectmen will appear on the ballot. Mark Kost is running unopposed in the election, and the Town of Westford will be fortunate when he is elected. For many years, Mark has applied his very successful career in finance towards the many committees he has been involved with in Town. He has dedicated countless hours to serving on the Finance Committee, Capital Planning Committee, and Public Works Initiative Committee, to name a few. However, his participation on these committees is never from the sidelines. He currently chairs both the Finance and Capital Planning Committees and serves as Vice Chair on the Public Works Initiative. His leadership has guided the Town through a period where our Operating Budget has surpassed $100M, yet our debt service remains manageable. Mark understands the need to invest in our facilities, our equipment, and our infrastructure. Westford, like many communities, has significant challenges regarding the age of some of our facilities. Mark understands these challenges and recognizes that we need to continue to improve these facilities so that we can continue to provide the level of service our community expects. These decisions and financial commitments help make Westford such a desirable place to live, work, and raise a family.
Mark also understands the importance of supporting not only our school system but also every town department. He has been Chair of the Capital Planning Committee since its inception, and has led the development of a true five year capital planning process. All Town Departments are required to constantly review and update their capital needs and each year present a Five Year Plan. This results in a wish list that far exceeds our budget capacity, yet each year Mark will develop a prioritized list that will support as many different departments as possible. Throughout this process, he has also developed a level of trust and respect from the leaders of each department and our Town Manager. These established relationships will be vital when working with each group in his new role.
Mark’s leadership and experience will be an excellent addition to our Board of Selectmen. There will be no learning curve when he begins his new role, and he certainly won’t be watching from the sidelines. Westford will benefit even more when he brings his energy, passion, and dedication to improving our community as a member of the Board of Selectmen. Please join us in supporting Mark Kost for Selectmen on May 5th.
