Members of Westford Junior Troop 85009 executed their Bronze Award project at the opening day of the Westford Farmer’s Market on Tuesday, June 21. Sydney Brooks, Allison Goerke, Meghan Hall, and Abby Williams accepted donations for the Westford Food Pantry as well as donations of fresh produce purchased that day at the market for donation to the Cameron Senior Center.
The girls used their donation drive to highlight the needs of the Pantry during the summer months when donations are typically slow, as well as the amazing and less known efforts of the Westford Community Garden to provide fresh produce donations each week of the summer and fall to the Senior Center. The girls were drawn to the need to provide food to the members of their community, and were impressed with the idea of some of those donations being fresh food thus providing families with healthy options. In addition to remembering the Pantry each time individuals or families visited the grocery store, they encourage interested citizens to donate their time to the Gardens washing, weighing and bagging donated produce, and delivering donations on Thursday’s. “The work Massachusetts has done to support local businesses with PPP loans and federal assistance was critical to keeping the state’s economy from crashing and future federal-state cooperation will be essential to our future recovery.”
