In the Junior Ghosts’s home opener, Captains Jacob Moore, Michael Picanso, Daniel Hickey, Henry Babineau and Drew Wilson worked together to fire up the team for their game against Woburn. These boys came out playing tough and did not let up for four solid quarters.
Picanso was a brick wall on defense, often holding back three and four opponents to keep Woburn from gaining any ground on the field. The Westford offense was unstoppable thanks to the rocket arm of Luke Reynolds and the speed and agility of his receivers Ryan Blagg, Ethan Ewing and Joshua Keith as well as the stellar blocking by his offensive line, C.J. Schuster, Wilson, Babineau, Joey Bella and Peter Burdin.
Westford’s first scoring play was the result of a long bomb from Reynolds to Blagg who strutted into the end zone. Bella made a great sack that led to a turnover and several key offensive plays to advance Westford into Woburn territory before Reynolds carried the ball into the end zone for Westford’s second touchdown. Burdin made a great kick for two extra points.
During halftime, the Junior Ghost cheer squad entertained the crowd with rousing routines.
Second half action saw Westford scoring three more times before the final whistle. Two of those touchdowns were the result of handoffs from Reynolds to Ewing who quickly found the end zone. In the final scoring play of the game, Blagg blazed down the field for 80 yards for a touchdown. Burdin made another successful kick through the goal posts for two extra points bringing the final score to 35-6. Notable second half defensive plays were made by Wilson, Hickey, Jason Pillion, Conor Moncreaff and Luke Fremault.
Westford plays at home against Lawrence Sunday, Sept. 25, at 11 a.m.
