Local 4-H Member Attends 97th National Congress

Littleton High School senior Jessica Carter is one of five 4-H members representing Massachusetts, who attended the 97th Annual National 4-H Congress, held Nov. 24-28, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, in Atlanta, Georgia.

More than 900 delegates from across the United States and Puerto Rico, gathered to participate in this year’s “Be True Be You” congress.

Carter was one of only 12 selected nationwide to be part of the leadership team responsible for hosting the event. She introduced Dr. Eugene Schoenfeld, a Holocaust Survivor.

National 4-H Congress is one of the premiere experiences for members across the country to participate in. National 4-H Congress provides an opportunity for young people to meet other 4-H members from across America, as they participate in educational workshops focusing on diversity, cultural experiences, leadership, and team development.

Inspirational speakers contributed each day to the Congress theme of being a catalyst of change. Speakers included Matt Rush, Dr. Eugene Schoenfield, speaking on his experiences as a holocaust survivor, Cara Mund, Miss America 2018, and ended with Dan Clark.

Workshops included global citizenship, dancing with the stars to drones, stem cells, and agri-science.  Tours included visits to CNN, Atlanta Aquarium, Atlanta Zoo, Coca Cola, and the Atlanta History Center.  The entire Congress delegation performed a morning of community service throughout the Atlanta metro area.

Evening galas and semi-formal dances gave the delegates another opportunity to gain a better appreciation of the diversity of delegates, to watch 4-Hers from throughout the country perform, and to develop networking skills to enable members to bring new knowledge and awareness back to their home states.

To be selected, 4-H members submited a resume packet and support materials, including a cover letter, letters of recommendation, and an essay on their 4-H careers, including leadership experience, community service, public speaking, and project skill development. Packets were evaluated by a team of judges, and the top eight were selected.
