State Rep. James Arciero recently welcomed Tess Keele of Westford, accompanied by her parents David and Kristen Keele, to the State House as part of the 2018 Massachusetts Diabetes Day on the Hill. This annual event is held to raise awareness of the medical, social and economic impact of diabetes on individuals and families in the Commonwealth.   As part of the event, Tess Keele spoke before the group regarding her personal diagnosis with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 4 and its impact on her life.

It is estimated that there are 30 million Americans with diabetes, with 645,000 people affected in Massachusetts. With the serious complications of heart disease, stroke, amputation, end-stage kidney disease and blindness related to diabetes, the estimated cost of direct medical care in Massachusetts is $5.5 billion a year.
