Kate Mitrano, a Westford resident and president of the Student Government Association at UMASS Boston, recently testified in favor of House Bill 1209: An Act Relative To Sexual Violence On Higher Education Campuses.

The legislation would require that Massachusetts public colleges and universities institute student climate surveys to measure the scope and depth of this problem.  It is estimated that one in five female students face the issue of sexual assault during her college years, which can have life-long negative impacts on the survivor’s future and life.

The bill was heard before the Joint Committee on Higher Education on which state Rep. James Arciero serves as vice chairman. Following the testimony and public hearing, Arciero and Mitrano met to further discuss the legislation which is being co-sponsored by Arciero.
