Thousands of elementary and middle school students state-wide walked, biked, and rolled to school recently in celebration of the 10th Annual Massachusetts Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. More than 300 schools participated in the event.
“It’s great to see so many students interested in traveling to schools without relying on a motor vehicle to get there,” said Transportation Secretary and CEO Stephanie Pollack. “Inspiring students to get to where they need to go by foot or pedal power at an early age can have lifelong positive impacts on the health of children and for Massachusetts as a whole.”
“Events like the Massachusetts Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day make it especially gratifying that MassDOT can provide communities across the Commonwealth a program like Safe Routes to School,” said Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver. “Healthy and active transportation options, and safe roadway use go hand-in-hand. The Safe Routes to School Program helps students connect these two concepts.”
This is the 10th consecutive year for the event, which is hosted by the Massachusetts Safe Routes to School Program. This MassDOT program works with elementary and middle schools to encourage walking and bicycling and also educates students on how to be safe.
The Massachusetts Safe Routes to School Program is sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation with funds from the Federal Highway Administration. The program promotes safer routes for students to get to school by fostering partnerships between advocacy groups, law enforcement, education leaders, and public health departments. The program currently serves nearly 900 schools in more than 200 communities across the Commonwealth.
