If you see it advertised on TV, chances are it’s not good for you…

Seriously, think about these three things and what you see on television: food, drugs, personal care products. Let’s talk about them one at a time and see what might be good about them.

Food…what do we see advertised on TV that is healthy for us to eat? Can you think of one thing? When I think of food on TV, I am hard pressed to come up with anything other than fast food, junk food and the like. Sure, there are some eating establishments that are advertised where you could find something on the menu that has the potential to be healthy, but what do they use as ingredients.  Buzz kill…you have no control over the oils and bad fats (most likely trans fats), the GMO ingredients, the amount of added sugar and salt, etc. that they use to keep their costs low and their profit high at your expense.

What about the drug advertisers.  I swear there are some channels that are owned by the pharmaceutical companies.  So many of the ads are about drugs. What about those drugs?

Please don’t misunderstand me; I’ll grant you in some instances, drugs and modern medicine do save us, but too often, they are substituted for our laziness in taking care of ourselves, in eating to be well so we don’t need drugs. If we eat well and control our food intake, we will be less likely to become diabetic, obese, depressed and less likely to suffer with other chronic ailments that plague our population. We are getting sicker, fatter and older sooner than ever before.

We see our doctor with a complaint, and instead of asking us what we are eating or how we are living, he/she gives us a prescription medication designed to suppress our complaint…our symptom. It doesn’t solve the issue though.  Instead, it is more likely to create a side effect that takes us back to the doctor’s office and gets us another drug to suppress that new symptom.

Ask yourself, “How many prescriptions am I taking?” What would your life be like if you ate and lived differently so you potentially might be able to reduce or stop some of those medications? How much money could you save if you weren’t buying all those drugs?

What about personal care products? Do you know how toxic your creams, shampoos, makeup, nail polish, laundry detergent and cleansers are? Many of them contain sodium laurel sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate for starters.  Your toothpaste may contain triclosan which has been banned from other personal care products but not from toothpaste! How that happened is a mystery to me, and not a good one. Very toxic stuff.

Let’s talk about nail polish.  It is the rare woman today who does not use nail polish. Out of more than 3,000 nail products listed in The Environmental Working Groups’ Skin Deep database, at least half tested positive for TPHP which is a hormone disruptor. Some nail polishes tested were shown to contain TPHP although it was not listed as an ingredient!

What exactly is TPHP, and what does a hormone disruptor do?  TPHP is Triphenyl phosphate; it is a suspected endocrine-disrupting chemical and is very often used in the making of plastics and in foam furniture as a fire retardant. Labeling it a hormone disruptor means it interferes with normal hormone function.

If you’re a frequent user of nail polish, exposure to TPHP may be a long term hazard for you, so be sure you’re aware of the dangers of nail polish and check to see if the brand you are using is a safe one.

Here’s a link to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Skin Deep database so you can check out the beauty products you are currently using to see if you’re exposing yourself to toxic ingredients and what your alternative go-to products could be.

When I have my nails done, I always bring my own polish, because I know it is a safer choice.

Remember to question, to do your own due diligence.  Don’t fall for advertising that is leading you down the garden path to products that are not in your health’s best interest.
