‘Main Street’ host Joyce Pellino Crane sits down with Amy L. Pressia, executive director of the Lowell-based Merrimack Food Bank, Inc., to remind viewers that many in the region do not have enough to eat.

“Viewers will be surprised to know that there are people right in our community where we sit in Westford who need help with food,” said Pressia.

It only takes a job loss and an illness to turn a life upside down, Pressia noted, even for people from affluent communities.

She tells the story of an older woman on the verge of retirement whose adult daughter got sick and needed help taking care of her three children. The mother took them all in, but found herself financially challenged. She turned to the food bank for help.

This time of year is difficult, said Pressia, because people have to choose between heating their homes, buying their medicine or eating.
