At least 200 gathered on June 14 at the Common, carrying home-made signs to remind onlookers that black lives matter.

It was the death of George Floyd on May 25th in Minneapolis that crystalized the decision of many to demonstrate against the unecessary deaths of blacks by some police officers.

In a video taken as Floyd lay on the street calling for his mother and saying he couldn’t breathe, Police Officer Derek Chauvin applied pressure to Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes, appearing to suffocate him.

A post by Catherine Doucet for help in planning a rally, was answered by Emily Gilstrap. Together they invited United States Rep. Lori Trahan (Westford – Democrat), Civil Rights activist Roland Gibson, and Lovingsky Jasmin who is an organizer, activist and ordained minister.

Floyd was under arrest for allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill, according to reports.

Chauvin has since been charged with with second- and third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. The other three police officers who were on the scene are charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.
