Those 65 and older are now eligible to schedule an appointment to be vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus.

Lowell General Hospital just opened a vaccination facility on Pawtucket Boulevard in Lowell to immunize  65-year-olds and older in this region.

Will Courtney, Public Relations Manager for Lowell General and Circle Health, said the vaccine is also available to people under age 65 who suffer from cancer, kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Down’s syndrome, heart condition, obesity, diabetes, and, just added, asthma. Smokers are also eligible to receive the vaccine, Courtney said.

Hospital officials upgraded an old, vacant building, just 2 miles away, into  one with fresh paint and carpeting.

“We fought to be a regional site because there was a bit of a desert in this area,” Courtney said.

If not already booked, online registration dates can be found by going to Cross River Center, 1001 Pawtucket Boulevard East, Lowell. But appointment times are filling quickly.

In this video, Courtney speaks with WestfordCAT News Director Joyce Pellino Crane about the rapid changes occurring as the vaccine is administered to thousands in this country.

“The effort’s been pretty successful so far,” Courtney said of those suffering from COVID-19. “We were up over 70 patients around the holidays,” Courtney said. “We’re down to less than 30 patients now.

The hospital treats around 9,000 patients who are age 75 and older, Courtney said. But now that most of those phase 1 patients have been vaccinated, health care providers can open the vaccine to the phase 2 population.

Both vaccines, Moderna and Pfizer will be used, Courtney said. Patients who receive the Pfizer vaccine will need a second shot three weeks later. Those who receive Moderna will be required to return four weeks later.

“We’re going to see more vaccines coming…” Courtney said. “They project by April the general population will be vaccinated.”
