At the final School Committee meeting of the year on June 14, several members spoke in recognition of Bill’s long-standing service to our schools and presented him with a few small tokens of appreciation.
While of course, the job of a superintendent extends to far more than the legendary calling of snow days, Bill is widely known as a keen observer of the weather.
In honor of his love of meteorology, one of the gifts was a handmade desktop “storm glass” that predicts atmospheric change just like its ship-mounted predecessors, which explorers and captains used to help navigate storm-ridden seas.
Used to predict weather since 1750, this mysterious forecasting instrument was employed by soon-to-be Admiral FitzRoy of the HMS BEAGLE, when he and passenger Charles Darwin, voyaged to the Galapagos Islands in 1831.
In presentation of this small gift, the School Committee fondly wishes Bill fair skies in his retirement, with the occasional Nor’easter to keep things interesting.
